Beneath Misty Mountains by Donna Mitchell (146 pages) covers the last years of Loy and Donna Mitchell’s work in Zimbabwe, completing the weaving of the tapestry begun in Donna’s first book, Among the People of the Sun.

Loy (1932-) and Donna Mitchell (1933-2001) were missionaries in Zimbabwe for 28 years. In 1958 they left the airport in Kansas City and made their way to what was then Southern Rhodesia, where they commenced their work at Nhowe Mission among the Shona speaking people. In 1965, they moved to the city of Umtali (now Mutare), a city nestled in a valley beneath misty mountains, and began their signature work in a city that did not have a New Testament church.

Beneath Misty Mountains shows the maturing of the church, not only in Mutare but throughout the region. From humble beginnings, where less than ten would meet in their living room, the church in Mutare has now grown to a dozen congregations numbering four or five thousand in total attendance. The Gospel radiated out from this city to farms and villages, numbering several hundred congregations.

Other mission works by our brethren may have been as successful, but none more so, especially when taking into account the leadership that has been developed. Several of the urban churches now have elders, and many congregations are served by preachers trained in the Mutare Bible School, an institution which Loy Mitchell, Roy Palmer, Dick Clark, and Alex Classen began at Nhowe.
